GeneralSecurity guard dies in Orange Walk RTA

ORANGE WALK DISTRICT, Mon. Oct. 25, 2021 — On Monday, October 25, at about 9:45 p.m., Andy Richard Smith, a 58-year-old security guard, lost his life between Miles 45 and 46 of the Philip Goldson Highway when the grey Nissan Pathfinder he was driving crashed into a lamppost.

Initial reports indicate that Smith had been traveling from Belize City to Orange Walk Town and was near the outskirts of Carmelita Village, a short distance from his intended destination, when he lost control of his vehicle, which slammed into a nearby lamppost,

The impact of the collision caused Smith to be thrown almost 10 feet away from his vehicle, and he suffered severe body injuries as a result. His body was found at the scene of the accident by police officers who visited the scene, and his vehicle was found in some bushes on the right side of the highway. After initially canvassing the area, the police transported Smith’s body to the Northern Regional Hospital in Orange Walk, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The cause of the accident remains unknown. It is still uncertain whether Smith was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, or whether his vehicle malfunctioned. A postmortem will soon be conducted on his body, and the results will assist police in arriving at a conclusion.

This collision is the second traffic accident that has occurred during curfew hours in the Orange Walk District in less than a week. The preceding incident was a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a motorcyclist, Brian Novelo, near the San Estevan roundabout. These two accidents occurred in less than a 10-mile radius of each other.
