BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Oct. 22, 2020– During a late evening “Ask The Experts” webinar this afternoon, October 22, the Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero said that about 37 new cases have been identified in the first batch of samples that were tested.

He also said that 6 persons are currently admitted to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital’s COVID-19 unit. These patients include a 6-year-old who has since been diagnosed with pneumonia and a kidney condition.

The child is currently in a stable condition, according to Dr. Manzanero.

The youngest person to die from COVID-19 in Belize was a 26-year-old female.

So far, two cases of COVID-19 have been found by COVID-19 screen teams at the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA).

The DHS announced that an extraction machine, which automates the process of sampling, has allowed the teams to extract 96 samples every 20 minutes.

The Belize Electricity Limited donated this first extraction machine to the Ministry of Health; another is expected to arrive soon.
