LADYVILLE, Sat. Jan. 9, 2021– A cab driver and his common-law wife were busted with close to 50 pounds of cannabis over the weekend.  The suspects have been identified as Jose Maldonado, 31, a cab driver of Venezuelan Site, Corozal District, and Reina Gongora, 27, from Chan Chen village in the Corozal District.

On Saturday around 10:30 a.m., Ladyville police received information about the possible transportation of a sizable quantity of cannabis and conducted a search of a grey taxi van driven by Maldonado.

The van apparently was having mechanical difficulties and was immobile on the Phillip Goldson Highway near Sand Hill Village.  Officers on patrol stopped to render aid but detected the scent of marijuana and proceeded to search the vehicle. That search resulted in the discovery of 38 parcels of cannabis, which had a total weight of 47.2 pounds.  Maldonado and Gongora were jointly charged for possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.
