SAN IGNACIO, Cayo District, Sat. Aug. 14, 2021– On Saturday, August 14, 2021, a 19-year-old lost his life in a road traffic incident in San Ignacio. Upon receiving reports of the accident, the police visited the scene on Loma Luz Boulevard in San Ignacio Town. They saw a heavily damaged Gray Ford Escape at the intersection of Branch Mouth Road and Loma Luz Boulevard.

The driver of the Ford Escape, Valdemir Lino, 27, a Belize City resident, had reportedly been traveling from Santa Elena to San Ignacio when be made an abrupt left turn into a lane in which there was oncoming traffic. This abrupt turn allegedly caused Lino to collide into 19-year-old Jaylon Alvarez.

Reports revealed that after the collision, Lino drove a further 150 feet before he came to a stop and came out of the vehicle to render aid to Alvarez. Alvarez was found near his totaled black motorcycle. He was later transported to the San Ignacio Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead in transit.

Since the incident, Lino has been detained and samples have been obtained to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. While he is detained, the mother of the victim believes that her son’s demines could have come at the hands of his girlfriend saying that she believes some sort of cover-up may be taking place to protect the young lady.
