SportsTennis News – Youth Tournament

BELIZE CITY, Tue. Mar. 14, 2017–The second Junior Singles tennis tournament for this year kicked off this past Saturday, March 11, at the Belize Pickwick Club Tennis Courts, following the last tournament held on January 29, 2017. In both tournaments, which were round robin style, Stefan Sosa’s aggressive play proved too dominant for his peers, and he came out on top in both tournaments, defeating Adrian Marshalleck in the first tournament’s finals, 6-0, 6-4, and defeating Carlos Mendoza in the second tournament’s finals, 6-2, 6-2.

In the Orange ball category, where the Court is made smaller to accommodate intermediate junior players, and which had fourteen participants, Daniel Musa made the finals by overcoming Errol Ferguson, 15-4; and Zachary Musa edged Luis Sacksick, 15-9. Daniel Musa won over his little brother, Zachary, 15-6, to take the championship, with both boys showing excellent movement on the court.

In the Green pressure-less ball category, Blake Lee’s consistency paid off, as he edged the athletic Nisani Mendez, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 in a very close and exciting match-off.

Congratulations to all the children who participated in the tournaments! Thanks to our coaches, Felix Peralta, Mike Sosa and visiting Cuban coach Maria Esther Luis Rodriguez for continuing to work with the children consistently to develop their game of tennis. All junior players from all categories are encouraged to keep on playing, as several tournaments are coming up!
