FeaturesThe Artistic Note - Supa G wins Artist of the Year award at Sound Fest 2009
The versatile Lensford “Supa G” Martinez, Belize’s Punta pop star, was honored at the 8th Annual Belize Sound Fest 2009, held inside the Belize City Center on Friday, September 4, as the Artist of the Year for 2009.

Supa G, a resident of Dangriga originally hailing from the village of Georgetown, had also received the Artist of the Year Award in 2008, at last year’s Sound Fest.

The Association for Belizean Artists First (ABAF) and Buddy Brown International presented Supa G with a crystal plaque, in honor of his accomplishments in music.

Among his latest hits are “Who’s Your Daddy” and “Son of Gun.” He released Di Scandal in late 2008, coming after similarly popular albums, The First Chapter and 4 Men/Lay The Pipe.

ABAF tallied the votes from persons who were asked in the weeks leading up to Sound Fest to select from among four finalists, who emerged on top after an informal survey was carried out, reportedly in downtown Belize City.

The other finalists were Tanya Carter, Melonie Gillett, and Berne Velasquez.

ABAF announced on Friday night that Supa G had won the contest.

Another Belizean artist honored by ABAF this year was Ben McKoy of the Belizean Melody Swingers. McKoy is being honored with a super-sized trophy, donated by Carol Palma and family, Belizeans residing in Houston, Texas. The trophy was for his longtime dedication to Belizean music.

Sound Fest 2009 saw the participation of a range of artists, including Tanya, Melonie, Princess Shirley, Jorge Ernesto Babb, Shattaz Kru (hailing from Punta Gorda) and the Ivaneese Band. The Imperial Band started off the show playing a range of festive September music.

The Youth Connection Band provided backup for some of the artists, including Chico Ramos, who recently released an album, titled Hand Wash Hand.

Poet River of Fire performed a patriotic poem.

Emcee for the night was Sugar City’s Dillon Jones.
