The casino issue

EditorialThe casino issue

Business is so good at the casino they opened a movie house, a bowling alley, an arcade and two nightclubs. But the casino business is not supposed to be mixed up with entertainment which is designed for children, minors and students. Casinos are generally run by people who think like gangsters, which is to say, violently. That is why a student trying to enter one of the Princess nightclubs got beaten unconscious by Princess security on New Year?s morning. A gambling casino has to have thug-like security, and that is the case at the Princess.

We are not moral crusaders at this newspaper. We never had a problem with Belizeans gambling with Belizeans. But, if you really think about it, gambling in Belize has also been effectively privatized. Everybody goes to the foreign-owned casino, and now our gambling dollars are exported, just like our telephone, water, electricity and other dollars. But that?s the way the politicians wanted it, the politicians whom we elected.

Everybody loves the casino, and there?s nothing we can do right now to roll back that Princess tide. But all the hypocrites in Belize must understand that an insidious process is gong on here. Adult entertainment is being mixed up with children?s entertainment. The casino has become so greedy they also think they?re a mall. There?s a contradiction here. Gambling is an adult vice. We should keep it far away from our children.
