The Maya learned the lesson very well

LettersThe Maya learned the lesson very well
July 2, 2007

Editor AMANDALA
Dear Sir,

In my letter published on Sunday, July 1, 2007, entitled “Study Cauhtemoc Cárdenas”, I made a mistake by spelling the name “Cauhtemoc” instead of “Cuauhtemoc.” I apologize. Come on, my roots Belizeans, isn’t someone out there who would like to participate? Start correcting my Spanish, for education’s sake. Don’t be selfish.

After saying the above, let me go on to something else. My ancestors said in the Chilam Balam that, “All moon, all year, all day, all wind, walks and also passes. Also all blood arrives at its place of its stillness, as how it reaches its power and its throne.” It also states that, “This war shall not be lost on this land, because this land shall be born again.”

The struggle for “Social Justice” does not have times nor understanding. The repression against our people from our own and abroad shall in a short future reunite us together. Our people, the Maya, Africans and we, their descendants, have been known in all our history to be patient, condescending, but untamable.

The Spaniards slaughtered our people in the time of the Inquisition in the name of their God with the sword in one hand and the cross in the other. The British came here as pirates (thieves, murderers, rapists, etc.) who also slaughtered our people, with the sword in one hand and the Bible in the other.

Our people by force had to accept the cross and the Bible, or die, up to this day. After time had passed, they got to like it. Today, they love and fear it.

My people, the Maya, had learned the lesson very well. After over 300 years of exploitation, our people, the Maya, stood up using a cross (La Cruz Parlante), the Talking Cross, to fight against their oppressors in 1850.

Today 2007, we have a new movement starting up on behalf of “Social Justice”. The Belize Covenant Movement took out an ad in the Amandala on June 27, 2007, showing its logo. In it there is a cross. What does it mean? “God’s goodness gave this land to me.”

I have to ask the question. And the Maya of Toledo, who are still fighting for a piece of their own land? Are they from another God?

Let me finish by saying, “All those that want to ask the man a question on talk shows, don’t be cowards. Give your names. Let me also tell you that I don’t know him nor he knows me. But we are all of “the brotherhood of light” – Social Justice activists. The Ku Klux Klan also used the cross.

Respectfully,
(Signed)             Clinton Uh Luna
