The Mighty Mandingo, KREM Radio turns 19

FeaturesThe Mighty Mandingo, KREM Radio turns 19
KREM Radio, operating on signals 96.5 FM, 91.1 FM and 101.1 FM from 3304 Partridge Street (the same address as this newspaper), today celebrated its 19th anniversary.

On this day in 1989, Belize’s first privately-owned radio station began broadcasting with a revolutionary format and message that still resonates with the populace nearly two decades later.

KREM Radio introduced dance hall music to Belize and later engaged the nation in the discussion of popular issues through its stimulating talk shows.

The list of stars to have emerged from Partridge is staggering: WUB host and deejay extraordinaire, Evan “Mose” Hyde; former deejay and Belize City Mayor, Marshall Nunez; former deejay and current Mayor of Dangriga, Frank “Pawpa” Mena; poet Kalilah Enriquez; current Amandala assistant editor Adele Ramos (a former KREM News editor); Women’s Roundtable hosts Virginia Echols and Yaya Marin-Coleman; the late Selvin “Smokey Joe” Wade; attorney Richard “Dickie” Bradley, whose Wednesday night talk-show electrified Belize in the 1990’s, and many others too numerous to mention.

Today, the 12-member staff shared their joy with the people of Belize. Beginning this morning on the Wake Up Belize Morning Vibes, giveaways were made to callers who answered questions on KREM’s past.

Over the weekend, the official “birthday bash” was held at Palm Island Nightclub on the Northern Highway.
