The PUP calls for investigation into assault charges by Minister’s son

HighlightsThe PUP calls for investigation into assault charges by Minister’s son

BELIZE CITY, Wed. Dec. 18, 2019– Today, Belizeans and particularly residents in Belmopan, heard the harrowing cries and pain of a mother who detailed on PLUS and Vibes TV the physical assault and threats to her daughter and her one-year old granddaughter.

The mother alleged that it is the son of a Minister of government who has had a pattern of abusive behavior but who operates above the law due to his high connections in government.

The accusations, allegations and sordid details quickly made the social media and talk show circuit with further allegations that the victim’s statement has gone missing from the police and the accused perpetrator has been released.

The PUP welcomed earlier statements by the Commissioner of Police Chester Williams that he would focus on domestic violence as one of his areas of action to reduce crime. The PUP urges him to act decisively in addressing this issue and calls on the authorities, and in particular, to carry out a thorough and fair investigation into these serious allegations.

The PUP strongly condemns all acts of violence and discrimination against women and reminds all Belizeans that no one is above the law. The PUP further calls on all political, religious, education and business leaders to take a ZERO tolerance approach to violence against women and to champion policies and legislation that seeks to protect our women and children against abuse, sexual harassment and violence.

We await official updates on what transpired in this matter and will be monitoring this matter very closely.
