HighlightsThe Thomas “Lester” Garbutt Lighthouse for Hunting Caye

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Sept. 14, 2020– Hunting Caye has had its lighthouse renamed the Thomas “Lester” Garbutt Lighthouse. Garbutt was its former operator.

Garbutt was a courageous lighthouse keeper for almost 40 years, from 1961 to 2001, when he died.

A proposal to Cabinet to rename the caye was made by Attorney General and Minister of National Security Michael Peyrefitte, and the proposal was unanimously approved.

Garbutt’s family, government officials and other supporters and well-wishers all attended the ceremony, which included a plaque dedicated to Garbutt’s son, Charles, a lighthouse keeper at English Caye who went missing in 1998.
