THOUGHTS ENTWINED ? the legacy of Rita Sedacy and Ernest D. McPherson

FeaturesTHOUGHTS ENTWINED ? the legacy of Rita Sedacy and Ernest D. McPherson

Sedacy, a.k.a. Cherry, is 59 and Ernest would have been 33 today?an age difference of 26 years. Yet, by just reading their poetry, you could not perceive that they had been born decades apart, though both in the month of October.

In fact, Ernest?s poetry?both the language he employs and their philosophical nature?show a man of intellectual maturity, spiritual wisdom, self-love, and racial consciousness. These are all elements that come to light in the lines that he fashions into each piece of poetry that appears in the anthology, Thoughts Entwined.

Their joint anthology evidences not just the timelessness of poetry, but also the timelessness of love.

Interestingly, these October-born poets have authored a few pieces that go by the same name. The poem Shattered is one example. Both versions of Shattered were included in Sedacy?s previous anthology, Joy and Pain, in which McPherson was a guest poet. Only McPherson?s version of Shattered appears in the latest anthology.

Shattered

By Ernest McPherson

Now I?m wondering, as I lay in the dark

What happened in our lives, where is the bright spark?

All the thrill and fun we used to go through

Now we are both so bitter and blue?

Shattered

By Rita Sedacy

I gave my heart to you on a platter

You dropped it and made it shatter

I thought you would handle it with care

But I was wrong, I fear?

In addition to the bliss of love, these poems undoubtedly express what is described as the ?down side? of love?the pain. There is the male perspective and the female perspective, which is, in fact, what makes the collective works of Sedacy and McPherson so powerful.

The anthology, Thoughts Entwined, is a collection of poems based on varied themes, thought the most prevalent is love?the romantic love that Rita and Ernest shared before his sad departure.

Other selections in the 41-piece anthology include: You Are Beautiful, a piece Rita dedicated to her supportive daughter, Arilee G. Flowers; Sister in law, by Rita dedicated to her close friend, Amira Polanco Coye; Ghetto Cinderalla by Ernest, Downright Insanity by Ernest, and Black Power by Ernest, and their joint composition – Be the Children?s Guide.

Sedacy also includes the poems Ellion and Little Oscar, dedicated, respectively, to Ellion Augustine, one of her students at Tubal Trade and Vocational Institute who had died in 2004; and Oscar Velasquez, the 4-year-old boy who was found dead in Collet inside an old refrigerator this February.

Well-known radio personality, Hyacinth Latchman, writes, in her reflection of Ernest, appearing on page 9 of the book, ?Ernest was a regular listener of the [Friends FM program she had hosted up until the late 1990?s] and frequently mailed poems of his own, which he asked me to dedicate to the love of his life, Cherry.?

She added, ?As time went by, I looked forward to receiving his poems about love, about laughter, about broken hearts??
This is the fifth book of poems Sedacy is releasing. Her first was Voice of a Woman. Following that were My Heart to Yours (Love Poems 1), Joy and Pain, and Echoes from Within ? Ernest?s prior collection.
The fifth, Thoughts Entwined, is scheduled to be launched sometime in June.
