To sleep, perchance to die

GeneralTo sleep, perchance to die
Kenroy Tyron Mejia, 17, an unemployed resident of Belize City, was found in a fetal position lying on his bed with two gunshot wounds in the right temple. It is suspected that Mejia might have been murdered by a close acquaintance of his; there was no sign of a forced entry at the small one-bedroom home where he lived.

Mejia was at one point a murder suspect in the homicide of a fruit vendor, Carlos Sucuqui, 20, a Guatemalan, which occurred on October 7, 2010, around 6:00 a.m., while Sucuqui was preparing his cart for the day’s sale.

Mejia’s body was discovered around 8:30 a.m., on Sunday, November 7, in a single-bedroom house located at the corner of South Street and East Canal; he had apparently been dead since about 2:00 a.m. that morning.

Police recovered two 45mm expended shells and two slugs from the crime scene.

The tiny 10’ x 4’ board house where Mejia’s body was found had cement stairs, graffiti on its walls, and stood in a yard filled with garbage. When we arrived on the scene, a few men were dismantling it.

Mejia does not have any children, but has relatives who reside in the south; his post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

Amandala spoke to a good friend of Mejia, who told us that Mejia had been a little spooked by the knowledge that his life was being threatened.

According to this friend, Mejia had gotten into a fight on the morning of Saturday, November 6, with persons said to be from a rival group. “This was a setup; they just chanced this boy out of his life just like that,” said the anonymous friend.

The friend told us that Mejia had allegedly gone along with another individual to commit a robbery sometime that Saturday, but the scheduled hit was delayed because the institution had been closed, and according to the friend, that was when Mejia’s sidekick suggested that they should rob another place.

Shortly after, Mejia was beaten severely by a group of men and had been complaining of pains periodically throughout the day.

According to this friend, another man had been in the house with Mejia: “He [the murderer] put a pillow over his [Mejia’s] head, while he was sleeping, and shot him two times in the head; he still had on his warm cap.”

“He [Mejia] was no gang boy or anything like that, mien. He never killed nobody either; that boy never got into any type of gang business or drug business. He just hustle, he is the type of person that would go buy for you to make some money,” said the friend.

According to police, stolen items were found at this same location, belonging to the Wesley Methodist Preschool; the robbery of the preschool took place sometime over the weekend of Friday, October 8, 2010.
