Too many House members

LettersToo many House members

The Prime Minister was quoted as saying that with the austerity measures that the country will be embarking on, that even the Parliamentarians will not be spared.

The world, including Belize, is now enjoying modern communication and a representative can easily communicate, with his constituents.

Belize?s population is estimated to be 260,000 and there are 29 representatives. Belizeans should put a freeze on this number of representatives, until the country?s population exceeds 500,000.

At the time when the ?White Paper? pertaining to an independent constitution was discussed, among many presentations was that the House membership should remain at 18 until the country would reach a population in excess of 250,000.

There is no need to have divisions that are, in some cases 50% more than others. A variance of a plus or minus 10% should be the legal requirement.

The Election & Boundaries Commission must be empowered with a mechanism whereby it can adjust the boundaries of any division that is bigger than others. This should be done automatically without seeking permission from the National Assembly.
