Traffic accident claims the life of Biscayne woman

GeneralTraffic accident claims the life of Biscayne woman
Losing a loved one would be very hard on anyone. If the person were sick for some time and deteriorating in health, the blow would somewhat be expected and therefore easier to accept.

But for the family of 67-year-old Mrs. Constance Andrewin, a resident of BiscayneVillage in Belize District, that is not the case. She lost her life in a horrific traffic accident on Saturday February 25, 2012.

Today, Amandala had an opportunity to interview Jefferson Spencer, Andrewin’s son. According to Spencer, he was at his mother’s house waiting for her when he received a phone call telling him that she had been in an accident.

Spencer recalled seeing a blue Ford F-150 pick-up across the road from his mother’s house, but had no idea that that was the same truck that was involved in the accident with his mother.

At about 6:45 p.m. Saturday night, police visited Biscayne Village, where they observed a blue Ford F-150 pick-up truck bearing license plates #BZC-33666, on the left hand side of the highway, with damage to the windshield, grill and right side of the fender.

A short distance away from the truck, police also observed the lifeless body of Andrewin, and a damaged Horizon brand bicycle near her body.

According to Spencer, an eyewitness, a friend of the deceased, told him that his mother was riding on the side of the road when she was knocked down. Spencer told us that his mother was wearing a white blouse and her bicycle had reflectors on it as well, so even though it was dark, the driver should have been able to see her.

Moreover, his mother had just passed a lamppost, and it was on a straight piece of the road, so she should have been very visible.

Spencer told us that the impact of the vehicle was with such force that his mother’s body was broken and distorted in an unnatural position.

“It’s not a way that anyone would like to see their mother in,” he said.

He also told us that his mother was well known and loved in her village and the surrounding areas. She had friends in the neighbouring villages all the way to Rancho Dolores, and that she would be missed by thousands of people who knew her.

The driver of the vehicle, David Zetina, 45, a Belizean administrator from Western Paradise Village, reported that he was driving the pick-up truck towards Belize City. When he reached Biscayne Village, Zetina claims, he was blinded by the high beam from a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

It was at that time that he saw a female riding a bicycle and he applied his brakes in an effort to avoid hitting her, but because he was so close to the rider, his efforts were futile and she was knocked down.

Constance Andrewin was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A urine sample was taken from Zetina and he has since been served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution.

Spencer told Amandala that Andrewin had just celebrated her birthday on February 15 with her family.

The funeral service for Constance Andrewin is tentatively set for Sunday morning or afternoon, at the Biscayne Seventh Day Adventist Church and arrangements are being made to try and accommodate all who wish to attend the service.

Up to press time, Zetina has not been charged, but police are continuing their investigations.
