UDP concedes to Chebat: no August convention

PoliticsUDP concedes to Chebat: no August convention

BELIZE CITY, Wed. Aug. 11, 2021– Today, the UDP Secretariat issued a press release to note that it acknowledges the public health concerns which prompted Minister of Health and Wellness, Hon. Michel Chebat, to deny the party authorization to hold a convention on August 15 in Belmopan to select a standard bearer for that constituency.

The release states, “The United Democratic Party (UDP) acknowledges Government’s request for support and understanding, as the nation is currently experiencing the third wave of the COVID-19 disease with increasing infections and hospitalizations countrywide.”

The party used the release as an opportunity to inform all stakeholders, interested bodies, organizations, and individuals that it is postponing the convention and all other major face-to-face events that would require a gathering of more than 50 persons. Reports are that a drive through convention was proposed but there is no indication if the idea was given any consideration.

The party then reiterated that it stands ready to assist the Government of Belize in the battle against the pandemic, and it noted that it will hold all the party events which have been postponed when it receives confirmation from the Ministry of Health and Wellness and the Police Department that it is safe to proceed.

The UDP further encouraged the public to join the effort to minimize the spread of the virus.
