US CDC issues Level 3 travel advisory for Belize

HeadlineUS CDC issues Level 3 travel advisory for Belize

BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Nov. 5, 2020– The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a level 3 travel warning for Belize. The CDC’s notice recommends that US citizens avoid all non-essential travel to Belize. US citizens should “consider postponing all travel, including essential travel to Belize,” it said.

The travel warning also states, “Local policies at your destination may require you to be tested for COVID-19 before you are allowed to enter the country. If you test positive on arrival, you may be required to isolate for a period of time. You may even be prevented from returning to the United States, as scheduled.”

They recommend that persons who must travel to Belize get full details about entry requirements and restrictions and get tested before they leave. The notice also states, “if you get sick in Belize and need medical care, resources may be limited.”

The Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA) was reopened to travelers on October 1 in an effort to reactivate the struggling tourism industry. The Belize Tourism Board (BTB), in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Belize Airport Authority, implemented a screening process for persons entering the country through the PGIA.

While the system implemented at the airport has proven to be successful thus far, this travel warning may discourage some potential travelers coming from the US.

Of note, the United States of America has recorded the most COVID-19 cases worldwide. As of 3:00 p.m. November 2, 9,544,315 cases had been confirmed in the US.

About 234,300 US citizens have died since the start of the pandemic. Over the last few days, the daily average of new cases in the US has approached the 100,000 mark.
