US State Department advises citizens to reconsider travel to Belize

HighlightsUS State Department advises citizens to reconsider travel to Belize

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Feb. 22, 2021– Due to an increase in violent crimes, including robberies and home invasions, in Belize since the start of this year, the U.S Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs, issued a “reconsider travel” advisory for the country on February 12. 2021. The release cites crime as the major reason for the advisory, in addition to outlining the CDC’s level-four travel health notice issued for Belize on February 2, 2021.

The release from the State Department says, “Violent crime – such as sexual assault, home invasions, armed robberies, and murder – are common even during daylight hours and in tourist areas. A significant portion of violent crime is gang-related. Due to high crime, travelers are advised to exercise caution while traveling to the south side of Belize City. Local police lack the resources and training to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents. Most crimes remain unresolved and unprosecuted. “

The release also mentioned that limited transportation options exist within the country and the businesses that are open are forced to operate with significant restrictions. The US is urging its citizens to avoid being out at night, to not resist any attempt of robbery and to be extra vigilant when visiting banks and ATMs, and it advises them to refrain from wearing expensive jewelry.

Advisories like this one may further hinder the recovery of Belize’s already ailing tourism industry. The Ministry of Tourism, however, has indicated that it is developing initiatives that are aimed at generating interest in the country and bolstering tourist arrivals.

Last week, during an interview with local media, Minister of Tourism, Hon. Anthony Mahler shared that the Cabinet has approved a long-stay program which he hopes will attract more visitors to the country. He said that persons signing on to the program would be placed in a special category and would be given the opportunity to live and work in Belize for up to 180 days when the program is finalized and rolled out.
