Veteran journalist jacked, terrified by armed robbers

GeneralVeteran journalist jacked, terrified by armed robbers

The gamblers complied with the gunmen?s demand, putting themselves face down on the ground. While the gamblers were on the ground, the gunmen used duct tape to bind their arms behind their backs, then bound their legs.

I, Roy Davis, a freelance reporter, was one of the gamblers.

We were robbed of the money we had, then the robbers went to another part of the yard where they accosted three other persons ? Andy Edwards, Kenrick ?Dusty? Panton and Patra Thompson. The robbers also stole money from them.

I looked up from where I was lying on the ground, and saw that the gunmen had gone to another section of the yard. I decided to try and remove the tape from my arms and found that it was easy.

After freeing my arms, I pulled the tape from my legs.

I got up and decided to try and get out of the premises before the gunmen returned.

I headed towards the gate that allows access to Cemetery Road and saw that it was padlocked. One of the gunmen came running towards me, so I climbed the fence, made of concrete and barbed wire that is about 12 feet high in all. The concrete portion is about 9 feet, and the barbed wire part that projects outward at an angle, is about 3 feet high.

I hesitated to jump on the street when I reached on top of the concrete portion of the fence, because I had to consider how I would execute my jump without getting hooked up in the barbed wire.

My hesitation was only for a brief moment, because there was the fear in me that I would be shot by one of the robbers.

I jumped up, then outward and managed to get over the barbed wire. But as I landed on my feet on the street, I felt searing pain shoot up in my feet. I fell to the ground, unable to move. I was glad to see that a police vehicle had arrived and was parked in front of the gate.

Groaning with pain, I motioned to some police officers.

After I got their attention I told them that the robbers were still in the yard. Some of the police officers entered the yard with their guns drawn and ready.

Two men who were later identified as two of the alleged robbers were seen emerging from through an iron gate at the front of the yard next to the one where the robberies occurred. They were detained by the police and taken into custody. A third suspected robber came through the same iron gate. He was shirtless and had a knapsack. He managed to walk unnoticed down Cemetery Road to the Chinese Restaurant at the corner of Cemetery Road and Lakeview Street. He stood by the front of the restaurant for about two minutes, then he walked down Lakeview Street towards its junction with Banak Street and disappeared.

The other two suspected robbers apparently eluded the police by returning the way they came ? by scaling the fence at the back of the NHI building at the corner of Curassow Street and Gibnut Street.

The police say they are going to charge the two men they have detained with several counts of robbery and aggravated assault.
