As soon as you begin geometry, you will be taught about reductio ad absurdum. By this system, you can prove a theorem by eliminating all the known possibilities except that which the theorem proposes. So that is how you prove certain theorems, by reductio ad absurdum, which is to say, reducing everything else to the absurd.

We are eliminating the PUP and UDP absurdities from the Belmopan theorem because we have been offered this VIP option. The PUP possibility is absurd because they have been robbing from us taxpayers. We know they are robbing us, and there is very little we can do about it. The UDP possibility is absurd because these are people whose understanding of politics is inconsistent, unscientific, and self-righteous.

Within the space of six months between November 2004 and April 2005, the leadership of the UDP made at least three critical mistakes.

The first blunder in our designated period took place in November of 2004 when the UDP not only spurned the opportunity to participate in the Senate Committee investigations into the abuse of Social Security Board funds, but also allowed their irresponsible mouthpiece to deride and disrespect the chairman of the Special Senate Committee ? Senator Godwin Hulse.

Hulse is a unique specimen, perhaps Belize?s real and unsalaried ombudsman. It appears that he is above party politics. A fabulous mind, he is also an indefatigable worker. This is a rare combination. His stature just keeps growing and growing in the estimation of those citizens of Belize who do not wallow in the mud of the partisan politics.

The UDP?s second big mistake, one which may be considered an error of omission rather than commission, took place after December 28, 2004 when they could not seal the deal with Mark Espat and Cordel Hyde. The two men were out in the wilderness for ten months, and the UDP leaders were unable to have them sign a contract. In the parlance of professional sports, the Albert and Lake I area representatives were de facto free agents, and with two seats staring them in the face, the UDP blew it.

The third big mistake was the most ridiculous of all. The Honourable Opposition Leader in April vowed to carry out a campaign of civil disobedience to bring down the PUP, a government he had, at various times, beseeched, instructed and/or ordered to resign.

The most unlikely candidate to lead any campaign of civil disobedience is the Hon. Leader of the Opposition. There is not the tiniest bit austere or self-sacrificing about him. He is a Renaissance man who delights in the epicurean, and whose bling bling vibes offer us not the slightest suggestion of Gandhi or Goldson.

Predictably, the supposedly epic civil disobedience campaign blew up in less than a week. It blew up on the Belcan Bridge and the ashes burned way down on Albert Street. Thus endeth the civil disobedience saga.

When we speak, the Hon. Leader of the Opposition must learn to be humble and shut his mouth. That is the only way he will learn. The streets are not a law court or a judge?s chambers.

As political observers, we benefit from the luxury of hindsight. We are not trying to compare ourselves with the great Leader of the Opposition, or seeking to sully his raiments. The fact is that there is a burden of proof upon the UDP which they will carry on March 1 next year.

Call us mavericks. Call us gadflies. Call us whatever. Right now there is only one election we really care about ? Belmopan, March 1, 2005. We want this indigenous, authentic, nationalist VIP to raise hell in the new capital. We?re sick and tired of the logic which has been betraying us. Let us have reductio ad absurdum.

VIP all the way. Power to the people.
