GeneralWednesday at Fresh Pond, pistol met shotgun ? shotgun won

Shortly afterwards, two men arrived in a grey two-door car. One of the men put the nozzle of a chrome pistol to the head of the 9-year-old son of the man, who was not at home. The boy?s mother, pregnant, grabbed the gun, pulled it away and a struggle ensued between her and the gunman. During the struggle she was hit in her stomach.

The men then left and promised to return the next day.

Reports are that about 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 15, Gillett, along with four men, arrived at the residence of the family at Fresh Pond in a maroon colour Nissan Pathfinder. They alighted from the vehicle, each of them armed with pistols, and went into the yard, led by Gillett.

Gillett was met by a son of the head of the family, in his twenties, who was armed with a pump action 12-gauge shotgun. According to a police report, there was an exchange of words between Gillett and the young man, after which the youth shot Gillett twice, in the left side of his head and in the right side of his body.

Gillett?s companions fled in the Pathfinder.

The police reported that when they arrived at the scene, they saw Gillett lying on the ground face up about 10 feet from the house of the family, in the yard. Gillett was pronounced dead on arrival at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

The police say they know the identity of Gillett?s assailant and are searching for him.

The two men who went to the family?s residence at Fresh Pond on Tuesday night, September 14, have been detained by the police, and more than likely, will be charged.

Dean Gillett, a resident of Lord?s Bank, was the common-law husband of Marlene Avilez, 25, an employee of the Belize Bank. They have one daughter, Deanne, 3.

Marlene told Amandala that she last saw her husband alive shortly before 8:00 a.m. yesterday, when he drove her to her work. She said he did not indicate to her in any way that he expected trouble. When he did not come to her work to pick her up at 11:30 a.m. yesterday, she became concerned and tried to reach him on his cell phone. Shortly, after she did not get any response, she was told by a friend that he had been shot and killed.

Yesterday, Marlene cried out loud while she was at the Queen Street Police Station giving the police a statement.

Earlier this year, Gillett was charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping in connection with an incident in which his cousin, a fisherman of St. Paul?s Bank, was kidnapped by two men but managed to escape. About three weeks ago, the charge was withdrawn by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Kirk Anderson.

Then about two weeks ago, Gillett was charged with handling $21,080.00 worth of stolen goods, which he allegedly obtained through the illegal use of Government cheques. Gillette was released on bail of $6,000.00 when he appeared in the #6 Magistrate?s Court.

Dean Gillett is survived by his mother, Patricia Flowers; his father, Norman Gillett, Sr., several brothers, sisters and other relatives.
