BELIZE CITY, Mon. Oct. 19, 2020– The trafficking of narcotics continues even while the global pandemic hammers at an already crippled economy. A 35-year-old truck driver was busted transporting close to 28 pounds of cannabis that was stashed in a compartment on a white Freightliner flatbed truck he was driving.
At about 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2020, Thomas Williams Bermudez, of Los Lagos, Ladyville, Belize District, pulled up to a vehicle checkpoint near the Toll Bridge in Carmelita Village, Orange Walk District.
During a search of the truck, a disconnected fuel tank mounted under the driver’s side of the truck was searched, and that search resulted in the discovery of a secret compartment containing twenty-two parcels of cannabis.
The packages had a combined weight of 11.916 kilograms (27¼ pounds). Bermudez was arrested and charged for the offense of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply to another.
