Wesley football females take control – while it’s dé jà vu for SJC and Gwen Liz

SportsWesley football females take control – while it’s dé jà vu for SJC and Gwen Liz
In continuation of last week’s action in the 2007 CSSSA football tournament, on Wednesday the females from St. Catherine Academy battled St. Michael’s College to a scoreless draw to earn their first point in their tournament campaign.

In the male match-up last Wednesday at the MCC Grounds, St. John’s College defeated St. Michael’s College by the score of 3-0. The goal scorers for St. John’s were Misael Canul, Amir Arnold and Marshall Nunez, Jr.

In the first game played last Thursday, Pallotti High School suffered their first loss in the tournament following a crushing 5-nil defeat to the defending CSSSA female champs, Wesley College. Diandra Mejia scored a hat-trick (her third of the tournament) while Kendra Clarke and Sherese Bernardez complemented the scoring with a goal each.

With the victory, Wesley females took a commanding lead in the standings with a perfect 4-0-0 record.

In the second game, the males from Wesley College extended their unbeaten streak to 4 games after playing Edward P. Yorke High School to a scoreless draw.

The male match-up scheduled for last Friday between Sadie Vernon Technical High and Nazarene High School was postponed and will be played as a back match.

In Monday’s action this week at the MCC Grounds, the females from Gwen Lizarraga High School ran into a brick wall, figuratively speaking, when they went up against St. Catherine Academy. However, Shantel Rodriguez scored the only goal of the game and gave Gwen Lizarraga High School the hard earned victory over the upstart St. Catherine Academy.

The second game was a rematch from last year’s controversial finals which resulted in the disqualification of Gwen Liz. This time around, St. John’s College did not have the services of semipro superstar, Deon McCaulay. Amir Arnold and Keenan Lopez scored for SJC while Hubert Baptist scored both goals for Gwen Liz as the game ended in a 2-2 draw. Gwen Liz finished the game extremely short-handed as 3 of their players received red cards and will have to sit out the next match.

But it is dé jà vu all over again, for a different reason this time. Amandala received information that only two referees were present for the game. Prior to the start of the game, both teams had agreed to use the two referees with the understanding that both referees would have a whistle and that each referee would officiate opposing corners of the field. The newspaper was further informed that instead, only one official had a whistle for his corner of the field while the other referee assisted on the side of the field as a linesman.

It is for that reason that the principal of Gwen Lizarraga High School lodged an official protest of the game. Earlier today, Amandala was informed that the protest committee had ruled that the game should be replayed in its entirety. But the 3 red cards for the Gwen Lizarraga players stand. The match will be replayed on a date to be announced later.

Getting back to action from this week, the males from Ladyville Technical High School pulled a 1-nil stunner over Anglican Cathedral College on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday, the males from Edward P. Yorke dropped a 11-2 bombing on Sadie Vernon Technical.

Wesley males and females are scheduled to do action today against Gwen Lizarraga High at the MCC Grounds. The results of today’s games will be posted in next Tuesday’s Amandala.

The Ladyville Technical High School female football team has withdrawn from the competition as well as the male football teams from St. Michael’s College and Anglican Cathedral College. The standings were revised since all previous results from games involving these teams are considered null and void.
