GeneralWilliam Godoy, 33, arraigned for golf-cart execution of Alfredo Cowo in San Pedro

Godoy’s family says police have the wrong man, and has planned a protest for this weekend

SAN PEDRO TOWN, Ambergris Caye, Belize District, Tues. Jan. 23, 2018– On Tuesday, San Pedro resident, William Godoy, 33, appeared in the San Pedro Magistrate Court to answer to charges for the murder of Alfredo Cowo, 26.

No plea was taken and Godoy, who was represented by attorney-at-law Richard “Dickie” Bradley, was remanded to the Belize Central Prison.

He is to return to court on April 13.

Police believe that Godoy was the man who walked up to Cowo and opened fire just before sunrise on Tuesday, January 16.

Cowo was in a golf cart with his girlfriend in front of the Jaguar night club on Barrier Reef Drive in San Pedro Town when he was executed.

Godoy’s family had planned a protest that was to have taken place during his arraignment, but they had to postpone it to this weekend because they could not secure a permit.

His family told the press that he is an innocent man. According to them, he was at home with his children when the murder occurred.

They further revealed that Godoy had even attended Cowo’s wake and funeral before being detained in connection with the crime.

The two were friends, Godoy’s family claimed.

According to them, Godoy is a popular mechanic on the island who has not even an inch of criminality in his DNA.

While Godoy’s family has proclaimed his innocence, police have told the press that based on an identification parade and information from Godoy’s accomplice, they decided to charge him.
