GeneralWindell Trapp was the target in deadly San Ignacio shooting, says his family

SAN IGNACIO, Cayo District, Tues. July 21, 2020– The family of Windell Trapp has told the media that he was the target in the double murder that occurred at about 1:30 Sunday morning, July 19, 2020 in San Ignacio.

Five men were sprayed with bullets in the parking lot of CK Sports Club in San Ignacio. Two persons died and three others were injured and remain hospitalized at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

Constable Danny Jimenez, of San Ignacio police, was standing outside the car while talking to one of the men in the vehicle when a man with a gun went towards the driver’s side of the car.

Jimenez grabbed the gunman and struggled with him to disarm him, but the gunman shot Jimenez in the jaw, then opened fire at the four occupants in the car. He then escaped.

Samuel Hall, 19, a taxi driver of Esperanza, was shot in the throat and died in the car; Windell Trapp, 32, an unemployed resident of Hall Layout in San Ignacio, also died on the scene after being shot in the head and chest.

The two other occupants of the car — Telesha McKay, 28, and Marquees Robateau, 19 — survived the shooting, but were wounded by the shots. McKay, a consultant of Esperanza, was shot in the shoulder; while Robateau, a sailor of the Belize Coast Guard, also of Esperanza, was shot in the chest, abdomen, foot and arm.

Constable Danny Jimenez’s jaw was broken as a result of the shooting, and he now needs reconstructive surgery for his jaw. Funds are currently being raised to ensure that he can receive that surgery.

Jimenez is a star football player who plays with the Police United Football Club of Belmopan, and he is also member of the Belize National Football Team and has travelled abroad to defend Belize with the team.

Windell Trapp was also a football player, who played with Verdes Football Club. He was the father of two children.

Trapp’s aunt told the media that her nephew, Windell Trapp, was the intended target, and that the other four persons were collateral damage. She said that Trapp had been receiving threats, and attempts had been made to kill him before. She said that the men saw Trapp getting into the taxi and followed the vehicle to the CK Sports Bar.

CK Sports Club and Cool Spot

Trapp’s aunt said that during a police investigation after the murder of a member of the Galindo family in San Ignacio, Trapp was detained, and after he was released, he began to receive threats.

Commissioner Williams brought the parties together and ordered them to stop the feuding and to live in peace, and the Trapp family agreed to keep the peace.

The son of a member of the Trapp family was subsequently killed in Punta Gorda, however, and the family believes that he was murdered as a result of his connection to Windell and the incident that Windell was accused of being involved in.

Commissioner Williams said that he was in San Ignacio and had conducted an inspection of the CK Sports Club, and found that it is a small space that is not suitable for the operation of a club. He is now trying to revoke the club license and letting the establishment operate as a restaurant.

The Commissioner said that he has spoken to Mayor Earl Trapp of the San Ignacio Town Board about revoking the club license and replacing it with a Publican Special License, and he will speak to the Minister of Local Government to make it happen.

So far no one has been arrested for the murders of Trapp and Hall, and the shooting of Jimenez, Robateau and McKay.
