Wesley girls remain undefeated in high School basketball

SportsWesley girls remain undefeated in high School basketball

The shooting duo of Wesley?s Ashley Gladden (12 points) and Janine Avila (11 points) were simply unstoppable. On the other end, ACC was unable to penetrate the Wesley defense. ACC appeared one-dimensional and completely out-of-sync with only three players scoring for them. Keisha Young (14 points) was responsible for 70% of their offence. At the end of the day the team play and chemistry of Wesley College were too much for ACC, as they endured their first loss of the season.

Wesley, who have won three Central Division titles and two national championships since the year 2000, appears poised and determined to win their fourth such title with only three games remaining on their schedule. Notably, two of these remaining three games are against opponents who to date have a combined record of 3-6.

While it?s never healthy to look too far ahead in competitive sports, Wesleyans in the old capital are anxiously looking forward to Tuesday, November 28, when they will meet the present league leaders – Gwen Lizarraga High School (GLHS), who as of Monday had won five while only losing once. If both teams maintain their success, the high school schedule makers should pat themselves on their backs, for come November 28, the Game of the Week should be between a (6-0) Wesley team versus a (6-1) Gwen Lizarraga team. It gets no better than that in female high school basketball.

While the females from Wesley are still undefeated, the males are no slouch either. After having lost their first game of the season against St. Michael?s College (SMC) by the score of 45-43 in overtime, the boys from Wesley have since reeled off four wins in a row against some of the major powerhouses in the division, winning by eleven over Edward P. Yorke, by one over then division leader St. John?s College (SJC) and just this past Monday by four over the Anglican Cathedral College (ACC) 55-51. They were led once again by Travis Lennan with 23 points and Gershom Rodriguez with 13 points. For ACC it was Jorrett Jones with 23 points and Tyrone Anthony with 13 points.

With the win on Monday Wesley now moves into third place in the division with three games remaining on their schedule. Of interest to note is that two of the three remaining opponents are presently playing under .500. As a matter of fact, they have a combined record as of Monday of one win against nine losses. While Wesley should have an easy time against these two teams, their encounter with Gwen Lizarraga on Tuesday, November 28, should be a classic. High school basketball enthusiasts, mark that date down on your calendar. It will be double header, double trouble – female Wesley against Gwen Liz and male Wesley against Gwen Liz. Do I hear ?high school basketball?. it?s catching on.?
