The Association of Tertiary Level Institutions of Belize (ATLIB) held its Northern Regional Basketball Tournament this past Saturday at St. John’s College gymnasium. At the end of the day, host school Wesley Junior College (WJC) emerged as male champions from a group of four, which, along with themselves, featured Corozal Junior College (CJC), Muffles Junior College (MJC), and St. John’s College Junior College (SJCJC). Meanwhile, in the female division, SJCJC, who are the 2008 champs, and WJC (the sub-champs) will represent the Northern Region.

An email letter forwarded yesterday from the office of the BPFL, informed FC Belize owner/manager Lionel Welch that his protest of the November 18 game against Ilagulei of Dangriga had been turned down, and “The result of the game remains the same: Ilagulei 2 – FC Belize 1.”
As I drive around this community where I grew up, I feel this sense of calamity and helplessness. How did what I knew as a child become what I see as an elder? How did a proud, disciplined people become this desperate, slovenly, unfocused group? In late 1993, our community was already well on its way down the proverbial slippery slope. With February 9, 1994 about to mark the 25th anniversary of the founding of the United Black Association for Development (UBAD), I thought the time was right for us, as a people, to hold a so-called black summit.
A lively crowd of about seventy persons, mostly teachers from schools in Cayo South and Belmopan, attended and vocalized their opinions about the Free Text Book Programme for Primary Schools at a public consultation hosted by Galen University at the George Price Center in Belmopan on Thursday, November 20.
The following statements, numbers 1, 6, 11, 24, 25, 26, 35, 39, 40, and 43, are incorrect in relation to the two mortgage loans coming from St. James and raise suspicion.
By now you must have heard the incredible lunacy that our new GoB is about to increase the taxes on Telemedia, taking up to 25% of its gross revenues (I read that fact on the back page of the Belize Times). What the heck is wrong with this government? What madness is this! In the recesses of which mind was such a wicked plot hatched, I wonder?
Today, Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, the mouth-piece of the Anglo-Dutch oligarchs, wrote in the Telegraph that Germany is facing its worst economic down-turn since World War II. In his blog posted in today’s Telegraph, he wrote that Britain is on the edge of bankruptcy and that he has his “fingers crossed.” Meanwhile, last night the US government moved to bail-out the world’s largest bank – CitiGroup.
Whenever I read an article which is not signed by anyone, the first thing that comes to my mind is that the writer lives in fear, not to call it another word. I start asking myself - what is it that he or she fears? It is understandable for those who are working for the GOB, regardless of which political party is in power.
Three shot, including young woman, in Santa Elena Tuesday night shooting spree; woman found stabbed... We had an institution that served the people, changed to a corporation which put the people first and gave citizens a chance to invest in a gilt edged undertaking. Then, for reason or reasons unknown, became the property of a very wealthy individual. He will be referred to hereafter as VWI.
Over the years, I have read a few articles or comments from the publisher with respect to the role Assad Shoman allegedly played at various junctures in the life of Belize. In each case I have taken note of those comments. The most recent comments were in the Sunday, November 16, 2008 issue of Amandala. Although I cannot recall the first time I read your observation with respect to the relationship between Messrs Musa and Shoman, I find the writings to be very enlightening, informative and instructive. I am sure that the first time I read your commentary was prior to my stint as president of the Public Service Union of Belize, as I can recall saying to myself that I am witnessing what I have read in your pieces before. I could remember pondering at that time that this brother’s moves were extremely brilliant and that he was on top of his game, that he was smooth and bold.
At the very highest levels of the legal profession and the two major political parties in Belize, there is almost absolute collaboration. In Belize, the legal profession is a syndicate, a closed shop – there are no mavericks. This is bad enough. After all, nobody ever said lawyers have to fight against each other, nobody ever said they couldn’t settle everything behind closed doors and then just pretend to argue in court. It’s the rule of law, right? Just a small, tiny step to the rule of lawyers. When the lawyers did the same thing (closed the shop) with the PUP and the UDP, however, then the rest of us, the masses of the people, became one big joke for the lawyer/politicians, in the first instance, and the Lord of Chichester, in the second.
Joseph Ellis says he will not fight decision from PUP National Executive Deposed PUP Corozal Southeast chair defends Sunday convention; says he “did the right thing”... Joseph Ellis, ordered by the People’s United Party National Executive to step down as chair of the Corozal Southeast Constituency Branch Committee for holding a standard bearer convention Sunday in defiance of an order by the Executive not to do so, told Amandala today from his home in San Joaquin, Corozal District, that he would not fight the decision made on Tuesday by the PUP’s national executive to expel him as chair of the branch committee and suspend the committee itself.
A woman’s birthday wish results in a $1,380 contribution to Salvation Army Christmas appeal... Carolyn Reynolds, 50, whose day job is executive director of the Women’s Issues Network-Belize, celebrated her half-century on November 15, 2008. Such a milestone would demand a larger celebration than usual, and Mrs. Reynolds and her husband, Calbert, planned a party with family and friends at their home on Blue Marlin Boulevard in the West Landivar area.
