Ten children now fatherless; Kerr’s family says his past “may have caught up with him”... While families all across Belize were getting ready for Christmas, Patrick Kerr, a 32-year-old family man and father of 10, was gunned down as he waited for a haircut. His family grieves for him but they also accept that it may have been his past which may finally have caught up with him

The murderous madness that has plagued the country for the past twelve months did not pause on Christmas Eve, Friday, December 24; on this night of celebration and preparation a stabbing incident, allegedly sparked by an “old beef”, has left a Hattieville teen of the Bainsville area lying in the morgue, after he was stabbed in the heart in a bar.

The $43 mil Muria arbitration decision

In one of his last judgments before his departure from Belize, Supreme Court Justice John Muria ruled that Government should pay BCB Holdings and its subsidiary, the Belize Bank, a $43 million arbitration award granted to the parties by the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) back in 2009.

A “red” Christmas — 7 murders in 7 days!

132 murders for 2010, and the year has not yet ended! The Christmas holidays have ended, but for several families in Belize who lost loved ones during the holiday to the murderous violence that seems to have enshrouded the country, it was a Christmas, not of giving, but grieving.

Año Nuevo: Por Que Eres Tan Especial?

Fort Street tour guides, operators to unionize over injustices at Tourism Village

We, as tour operators and tour guides who work in the Fort Street Tourism Zone on the outside, have decided to come together as one unit to voice our displeasure to the Belize Tourism Board of the discrepancies and challenges we are now faced with since the implementation of the Tourism Zone a few weeks ago.

Death and Christmas

The five murders over the Christmas holidays are telling us that the traditional message of Yuletide peace and goodwill was not really reaching Belizeans at the base of the pyramid. The days leading up to Christmas were tense; many Belizeans were realizing that the Pascua would be an uncharacteristically rough ride. And if the Christmas was dread, what was there to look forward to in January?

2010 Review: 1st Installment (January to June)

2010 was a significant year for Belize. Belize City (along with much of Central Belize, all the way through Belmopan) took its first direct hit from a major hurricane in almost half a century (Hurricane Richard), and murder rates reached an all-time high. But Belizean Dorian Villafranco, 17, brought good news home recently by excelling in regional examinations. He scored a record 15 Grade I’s in the 2010 Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) examinations.

From The Publisher

A few months ago there was a dispute inside the Muslim community in Belize City. It happened that I had very good friends on opposing sides in the power struggle. Ismail Shabazz, with whom I have been friends since 1968, was prominent in one faction, while a young brother I have known from his childhood, was vocal, and even physical, on behalf of the other faction.
