7 goals in shootout at Norman Broaster

Sports7 goals in shootout at Norman Broaster
Week 5 in the BPFL’s 2010 Caribbean Motors Cup is history, and still there are two undefeated teams, as defending champion Belize Defence Force and F.C. Belize remain at the top of the standings, while winless San Pedro Sea Dogs has a perfect 0-5 record for 0 points at the bottom of the ladder.

Out west in Krem’s “game of the week” at the Norman Broaster Stadium on Sunday afternoon, it was all guns blazing, as the young and upstart Toledo Ambassadors came into town with no respect for the home standing defending champion Belize Defence Force, jumping out to a 2-nil first half lead with goals from Ashley Torres (7 min) and Bernard Linarez (44 min). But the soldiers came fighting back, tying things up through Paul Nunez (47 min) and Evan Mariano (65 min). The score was briefly untied and tied again, as Ashley Torres struck again for the visitors and Erwin “Bird” Flores did likewise for the army, both at the 87th minute, to keep things knotted at 3-3. And in money time, the indomitable Bird returned at the 93rd minute to burn cotton and seal the 4-3 victory for the defending champion.

The other Sunday game was more bad news for cellar dwellers San Pedro Sea Dogs out at the Ambergris Stadium, as the late surging Belmopan Blaze invaded the island and took no prisoners, leaving with a 3-0 shutout of the Sea Dogs, with goals from Mark “Kelo” Leslie (34 min), Bertan Bermudez (82 min) and Leon Jones (89 min).

In the first of two Saturday night games, league leading F.C. Belize travelled to People’s Stadium in Orange Walk and proved their #1 ranking is no fluke, as they dealt a convincing 3-1 put down of home standing San Felipe Barcelona. Rookie Jarret Davis put F.C. Belize in front at the 42nd minute, and Nigerian dynamo Christian Okonkwo made it 2-nil with his 61st minute tally. San Felipe tried to make a game of it, as Oscar Acevedo found the target at the 86th minute, but Okonkwo promptly struck again at the 90th minute to secure the 3-1 victory for the visitors.

In the other Saturday night game, the struggle continues for winless Hankook Verdes, who had to be satisfied with a 0-0 draw at home in Marshalleck Stadium against visiting Griga United, whose only loss so far was to standings leader F.C. Belize.

This coming weekend, Week 6 will have some very interesting match-ups. Both Verdes and the Sea Dogs will be looking for their first victory at the Marshalleck Stadium, while the “big 4” will provide two real monster match-ups – Ambassadors vs F.C. Belize, and Griga vs BDF.
