Alburn Rivero 20/20 Cricket Competition under way in Burrell Boom Village

SportsAlburn Rivero 20/20 Cricket Competition under way in Burrell Boom Village

The Alburn Rivero 20/20 Cricket Competition, originally scheduled to open in Double Head Cabbage on October 12, finally kicked off this past Saturday, October 19, in Burrell Boom Village.

Nevertheless, on October 12, the promised 2012 season trophies, sponsored by SMART, were handed over to champions Excellence of Double Head Cabbage and sub-champs Western Eagles of Rancho Dolores; but the 20/20 games had to be postponed due to the pitch being too wet in Double Head. In any event, Excellence, whose captain Kene Broaster will reportedly not be returning from Los Angeles until January of next year, had elected not to participate in the 20/20, so the tournament was moved this past weekend to Burrell Boom instead.

Belize National Cricket Association (BNCA) Development Officer Conway Young reported on the games played this past Saturday, October 19, in the opening round of the Alburn Rivero 20/20, which follows a double-elimination format (teams drop out after losing two games).

In the first game on Saturday, Easy Does It of Lemonal defeated Kubuli Cricket Club. Easy Does It batted 161 runs all-out in 19.5 overs; Aaron Muslar top scored with 56 runs, followed by Conway Young with 37. Kubuli Cricket Club only managed 123 runs all-out in 16 overs; Jonathan Benjamin scored 44 runs, followed by Dorian Gabb with 26..

Game 2 saw Isabella Bank totaling 123 runs all-out in 15 overs, while Burrell Boom could only muster 51 runs all-out. Jovannie Baizer led Isabella Bank with 68 runs, followed by Frederick Guy, Jr. with 12; while for Burrell Boom, T. Ferguson scored 17 runs and Randy Rhaburn made 7.

The competition continues this Saturday, October 26, with two games scheduled at the Burrell Boom Cricket Field.

In the Winners Bracket, it will be Easy Does it vs Isabella Bank; and the Losers Bracket features Kubuli vs Burrell Boom.
