Canadian wanted in connection with murder of football star in San Pedro

GeneralCanadian wanted in connection with murder of football star in San Pedro

SAN PEDRO TOWN, Belize District, Thurs. June 16, 2016–San Pedro police have concluded their investigation into the vicious killing of San Pedro football star and popular coach, Melvin Almendarez, 34, of the DFC area of San Pedro Town, which occurred at about 11:00 p.m. on May 6 in the southern end of San Pedro.

The football star had been beaten and shot in his abdomen. Furthermore, a vehicle, believed to be a golf cart, was driven over the victim.

Police said that their investigation led them to the victim’s friend, Jordan Bacchus, 32, a Canadian who is wanted for questioning.

Police had taken Bacchus into custody after Almendarez was found dead, but only because they had found him in possession of cannabis, so they charged him for possession of the controlled drug and he was released on self-bail.

However their investigation into the case of Almendarez subsequently led them to believe, based on what they say is strong evidence, that Bacchus could be linked to the murder.

Police say, however, that Bacchus disappeared during the investigation, and they have been seeking him ever since.

Police are appealing for the public’s assistance to capture Bacchus. They are asking anyone who has information that can lead to his capture to contact the San Pedro Police at 206–2022, the nearest police station, or Crime Stoppers Belize, at 0-800-922-TIPS.

Police say that notices have been issued to all ports of entry/exit within the country and the Canadian Consulate.
