BELIZE CITY, Mon. July 8, 2019– The Opposition, People’s United Party (PUP), continues its winning streak in the third round of voting in the village council elections, held yesterday, Sunday, July 7. In a press release issued today, the PUP again is claiming victory in the village council elections..

Yesterday, elections were held in forty-three villages across the country. A total of 7 villages in the Corozal District voted, and the PUP won in 5 of those villages, while 2 villages in the Corozal District voted for United Democratic Party (UDP) village councils.

In the Orange Walk District 5 villages held elections. PUP village councils were selected by voters in 4 villages and the UDP was victorious in 1 village.

The Belize District had elections in 6 villages and the UDP won in 4 villages, 1 village elected an independent slate and the PUP had 1 victorious slate.

In the Cayo District, 6 villages held elections, and the PUP and the UDP each won in 3 villages.

In the Stann Creek District, villagers from 7 villages went to the polls and the PUP were victorious in 4 of those villages, while UDP slates were selected in 2 villages and 1 village elected an independent slate.

A total of 12 villages in the Toledo District went to the polls and elected 6 PUP village councils while 5 villages elected UDP councils and 1 village elected an independent slate.

At the end of this third week of village council elections the PUP reported that they have won a total of 164 seats, compared to the UDP, which won 111, and independent candidates who secured 26 seats.

Village council elections continue next Sunday, July 14, when another 40 villages countrywide will decide who they will elect to manage their affairs.
