Will Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) buy out its competitors in a hefty merger?
For a few years, talks have been on the table for Belize’s premier telecom provider to acquire the other companies in the country—SMART, Centaur Communications, and NEXGEN—and a press release issued by BTL confirms the rumors.
BTL mentioned that those conversations had begun in 2018. As Belize’s sole provider of fully bundled 5-Play services – DigiTel, DigiCell, DigiNet, DigiTV, and DigiWallet – they expressed that the company has evolved with strategic opportunities that are aimed at strengthening and diversifying its revenue base, which aligns with their goal from Telco to Techco.
During that transition, the company has launched various initiatives: 4G LTE Advanced, full Fiber-to-the-Home deployment, DigiWallet, and DigiTV.
In conclusion, BTL expressed that the purchase of these companies would strengthen the National Telecom, which would benefit Belizeans, as in any economy, large or small, reducing redundancy and maximizing the use of underutilized capacity in a capital-intensive industry would unlock effectiveness.
Those benefits would trickle down for a better return for over 1,500 stakeholders, including deploying savings to improve services, expanding coverage to underserved communities, and better value for consumers and employees.
Knowledgeable individuals say such a purchase would cost BTL in the tens of millions of dollars.
