GeneralFormer senior diplomat goes to court

Alexis Rosado

BELMOPAN, Tues. Jun. 3, 2025

One of Belize’s former senior diplomats, former Ambassador to the European Union, Alexis Rosado, appeared at the Belmopan Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, June 3, as a preliminary step in the hearing of his case after being charged on April 20, 2022, with rape and other sexual offences, which precipitated his removal from his diplomatic posts overseas. Since that time he has been on bail which was granted at $5,000 and he has remained within Belize.

According to an Amandala story of April 20, 2022 about the arraignment, the alleged victim first reported the matter in December 2021, and the “woman now in her 20’s alleges that Rosado entered a sexual relationship with her when she was 13 years old, and continued to engage in sexual acts with her until last year (2021).”

The former Ambassador was slapped with a slew of charges, which consist of one count of rape, one count of sexual assault, and six counts of aggravated assault, after the victim reported the matter to authorities.

She claimed that over a period of time, beginning while she was a minor, Ambassador Rosado had assaulted her multiples times and raped her twice.

Dickie Bradley, Rosado’s attorney

Speaking to reporters after the adjournment, Rosado’s attorney, Dickie Bradley said, “It was just a regular arraignment, nothing special, nothing out of the ordinary. Following an arraignment, procedurally the two sides, the defense and the prosecution would ensure that what is referred to in the lower court as a disclosure … up here, we talk about a deposition, that we are all on the same page in terms of what is the deposition, which includes statements, exhibits, medical reports, expert reports, whatever is. So, that was something that came up today as well. So, our side and the prosecution will sort that out between us. So, when we return to court, we have a deposition that is the same thing for all sides.”

The case was initially brought before the Magistrate’s level in 2022, but has been advanced to the High Court. Bradley says his client is on bail, as the alleged offense is bailable.

“In more industrialized, developed countries like America, Canada, the UK, or the whole of Europe, persons charged on allegations of murder, it’s taken for granted that you’re not going to keep them in jail unless they’re the famous P. Diddy that they have already … been found guilty by the system. But, as a general rule, there have to be compelling reasons to take away a person’s freedom. So, the accused person in this case is on bail,” he said.

Rosado returns to court on June 24.
