BELIZE CITY, Mon. Sept. 25, 2023

The streets of Belize City were filled with excitement, determination, and the pounding of running shoes on Sunday, September 24th, as the 3rd Annual Belize City Half Marathon unfolded. With three categories of runners participating – Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K – this year’s event was a testament to the spirit of Belizean resilience and a vision for the future of running in the region.

When the Belize City Half Marathon was inaugurated in 2021, its organizers set ambitious goals: to reach 100 runners by year three and introduce a full Marathon distance by year five. Remarkably, those goals are being achieved right on schedule as 110 runners laced up their shoes and took part in this year’s event. In 2025, we are committed to introducing a full Marathon distance, making the Belize City Marathon a premier long-distance running event in the region.

The Belize City Half Marathon has quickly grown into a significant event on the Belizean sports calendar, and this year’s turnout is a clear indication of the thriving running community in Belize. The runners ranged from seasoned athletes to first-time participants, all united by a shared love for running and a desire to lead a healthier, more active lifestyle. The event not only showcased the dedication of the runners, but also highlighted the strong community support it has garnered. Local businesses, sponsors, and volunteers played a vital role in making the event possible. As participants raced through the city’s scenic routes, they were greeted by cheering fans, volunteers distributing water and encouragement, and the vibrant spirit of Belize. The event was not only about competition, but also about unity and shared achievement.

Over $7,000 in cash prizes were awarded to the winners. The decision to award equal prizes for male and female runners marks a significant milestone in the journey towards gender equality in sports. Historically, female athletes have often faced disparities in opportunities, recognition, and compensation compared to their male counterparts. By levelling the playing field at the Belize City Half Marathon, we have taken a proactive stance to address this inequality. Equal prizes for men and women is not just about the distribution of cash rewards; it’s about fostering an environment where all athletes are valued equally, irrespective of their gender. It sends a powerful message to aspiring female athletes that their dedication and hard work are just as important and worthy of recognition as that of their male counterparts. Furthermore, it promotes inclusivity by welcoming athletes from all backgrounds and gender identities to participate without fear of bias or discrimination. The Belize City Half Marathon has become a shining example of how sports can be a catalyst for positive social change. This move is not only a reflection of current values, but an investment in the future. By offering equal prizes, the Belize City Half Marathon inspires young girls and boys to pursue their athletic dreams with equal enthusiasm. It paves the way for a generation that values equality and inclusion in all aspects of life.

As the Councillor with responsibility for Youth, Sports, and Wellness, I am exceptionally pleased with this event. It underscores the importance of physical activity and well-being in our community. We are working tirelessly to promote and support initiatives like the Belize City Half Marathon that contribute to keeping Belize City healthy. This event aligns perfectly with our vision for a healthier and more active Belize City. We recognize that sport is a powerful tool for building a more inclusive society, and this event sets a gold standard for others to follow. The success of the Belize City Half Marathon is a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together with determination and a shared vision. It’s not just a race; it’s a symbol of resilience, growth, and the pursuit of dreams.

As the sun set on Belize City after the Marathon, runners and supporters left with a sense of accomplishment and anticipation for what the future holds. With each passing year, the Belize City Half Marathon promises to be a beacon of inspiration for runners and communities alike, reminding us all that the finish line is just the beginning of a new race. So, mark your calendars, Belize, because the 4th Annual Belize City Half Marathon promises to be even more remarkable, as we continue to run towards a healthier, stronger, and more united future.

A huge thank you to the sponsors of this event – the Belize City Council, National Sports Council of Belize, Atlantic Bank, Medina’s House of Jewelry, KV Events Planning, ABC Life Support. And to all the volunteers who played a vital role in the success of this event, THANK YOU!!
