SportsFormer national football President and Mighty Avengers manager, David Cruz passes

BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Oct. 20, 2022

We received the sad news last night that retired senior civil servant and sports enthusiast David Cruz had passed. Though not a star footballer himself, David was the founding manager/secretary and driving force behind the renowned Mighty Avengers Football Club of the late 1960s and 1970s in the Cayo District’s twin towns of San Ignacio/Santa Elena. He later held the post of National Sports Director, and also served a few years as President of the then Belize National Football Association (BNFA) in the late 1980s.

David, who was a diabetic for many years, reportedly passed away yesterday afternoon in Belmopan where he has resided for the past four decades plus.

Our sincere condolences from the Amandala sports desk to all his relatives, including his Mighty Avengers family, and many friends in the sporting community. Respect on your contribution to Belizean sports, and Rest In Peace, brother David Cruz!

(AMANDALA Sports Ed. Update: Funeral services for David Cruz were held on Tuesday afternoon, October 18, at the Nazarene Church in Belmopan.)
