BELIZE CITY, Fri. Nov. 27, 2015–Two men, an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old, one from Dangriga and the other from Maskall, who police strongly believe were the killers who shot and killed Belize City businessman Ruben Perez, of Vernon Street, at about 3:30 yesterday afternoon in his office on his business compound, have been jointly charged with murder.

Police say that the men are unknown to them. The second man later was captured by police with the assistance of the public after the footage of the surveillance cameras was shown on 7News.

The first alleged murderer was captured within minutes after the shooting occurred.

The incident was caught on more than one security camera in the compound, which showed the murder of Perez, owner of Perez Construction Supplies.

Reports to Amandala are that at about 3:30 Thursday afternoon, two men who were not wearing masks barged into Perez’s office. He got up to see what the men wanted, and one of the two bandits pulled out a gun and shot Perez in the head and neck. Other news reports say that there was a struggle with the men before Perez was shot.

The men then ran out of the compound, and rode away, but one of the killers returned to rob the wounded businessman of his cellphone.

During a police press brief held at the Racoon Street Police Station today, Superintendent Hilbert Romero said that they believe that it was a random act of violence, that the killers saw that no security guard was posted in the business establishment, and therefore, they went to rob the business.

The gun has not yet been recovered, but the cellphone stolen from Perez has been recovered from one of the killers, as police investigation continues.
