BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Mar. 28, 2019– It was an all-Belizean field of 100 riders that took part in the 38thh Belmopan Cycling Classic on Sunday, March 24 – 71 Elite/Masters, 5 Females, and 24 in the Junior/Youth category.

The Elite/Masters race went from Belmopan to Belize City and back, for 100 miles, and some 47 of the 71 starters completed the race, 42 of them inside the 30-minute limit after the winner.  All 5 Females finished their 60-mile ride from Belmopan to Gracie Rock and back; and 20 of the 24 Juniors completed the same 60-mile journey as the Females.

With the count-down under way for the Annual Holy Saturday Cross Country Classic, the Belmopan Classic is viewed as a barometer for cyclists’ state of readiness for the Big One on April 20.

Top 12 Elite/Masters finishers:  1st Place – Edgar Nissan Arana (Westrac Alliance, 3:44:01); 2nd Gregory Lovell (Digi-Elite, 3:45:33); 3rd Joslyn Chavarria, Jr. (Digi-Elite, 3:45:36); 4th Tarique Flowers (Benny’s Megabytes, 3:45:36); 5th Ron Vasquez (Benny’s Megabytes, 3:45:39); 6th Angel Tzib (Westrac Alliance, 3:45:44); 7th Gian Lino (Westrac Alliance, 3:49:35); 8th Ernesto Bradley (Digi-Elite, 3:49:44); 9th Robert Liam Stewart (unattached, 3:49:44); 10th Henry Moreira (Smart Cycling, 3:49:44); 11th Phillip Leslie (Smart Cycling, 3:49:44); and 12th Carroll Devin Azueta (Recino’s Imports, 3:49:44).

Females finishing order:  1st Place – Kaya Cattouse (C-Ray Cycling, 2:49:49); 2nd Nicole Gallego (unattached, 2:49:49); 3rd Alicia Thompson (Belize Bank Swoosh, 2:49:49); 4th Kaylynn Gillett (Belize Bank Swoosh, 3:13:19); and 5th Fiona Castillo (BFSC, 3:13:19).

Top 10 Junior/Youth finishers: 1st Place – Shayle Paredes (Chavarria Cycling, 2:19:39); 2nd Derrick Chavarria (Chavarria Cycling, 2:19:44); 3rd Cody Flowers (WKC Strikers, 2:19:55); 4th Brian Mangar (Surge Cycling, 2:20:16); 5th David Banner (Surge Cycling, 2:20:16); 6th Daniel Williams (Chavarria Cycling, 2:22:56); 7th Renan Codd (Cayo Jr. Team, 2:22:56); 8th Henry Li (Jason’s Cycling, 2:22:56); 9th Kenne Gongora (unattached, 2:22:56); and 10th Maleek Wagner (WKC Strikers, 2:22:56).

Special category rankings included:

Youth Category – 1st Derrick Chavarria (Chavarria Cycling); 2nd Daniel Williams (Chavarria Cycling); 3rd Renan Codd (Cayo Jr. Team).

Elite 4/5 Category – 1st Gian Lino (Westrac Alliance); 2nd Kaydine Pinelo (Surge/D&A Construction); 3rd Joshua Fuller (Smart Team); 4th Austin Armstrong (Clear the Land); 5th Ron McKenzie (AKL Powerade).

Masters 35+ Category – 1st Robert Liam Stewart (unattached); 2nd Henry Moreira (Smart); 3rd Quinton Hamilton (unattached).

Masters 4/5 Category – 1st Dwayne Wade (Recino’s Imports); 2nd Warren Coye (Santino’s); 3rd Preston Martinez (M&M Engineering); 4th Santiago Castillo (Santino’s); 5th Rutherford Cunningham (Smart Team).
Ernest Meighan Classic

The next major race on the Cycling Federation of Belize calendar is the 3rd Annual Ernest Meighan Classic this Sunday, March 31, which leaves at 7:00 a.m. from Leslie’s Imports and goes to Cave Branch and back.

Junior Cross Country

After that it will be the 20th Annual Junior Cross Country Classic, on Sunday, April 7, from San Jose Succotz to Belize City.
