Remembering Maurice Jones ? the ?70s superstriker!

FeaturesRemembering Maurice Jones ? the ?70s superstriker!

?I used to get up there; I believe I scored more goals with my head than with my feet,? remarked Jones.

In the 1978?1979 season when he played for White Label, Jones was the most prolific striker and he won the goal scoring title. The following season, 1979?1980, Jones and ?Patatu? Cutkelvin scored 42 goals each to tie and share the goal scoring title. Jones was still playing for White Label and Patatu played for Landivar.

In 1977 Jones also scored 42 goals, matching his career high. He was beaten in goal scoring only by Wayne ?Hogman? Olivera, his teammate, who scored 44 goals. Jones and Olivera were the twin forwards for Sir Andie?s White Label at the time. Jones played on the left and Olivera played on the right. White Label won one championship in the three seasons Jones played. Jones played for J and E before he joined White Label. J and E won the championship the season Jones played.

Jones was one of the top ranking strikers for the undefeated third division team, Max Service Center. The team was so good that Amandala?s publisher, Evan X Hyde wrote that they were men among boys.

It was while he was with Max Service Center that Jones represented Belize in a game against Jamaica which Belize won by the score of 2 ?1. Jones and Maurice ?Pocket? Matthews were the goal scorers for Belize. Besides playing against Jamaica, Jones represented Belize in games against the Cayman Islands and Mexico. Jones scored in almost every game he played.

After he left Max Service Center, Maurice played for Belprint, J and E, White Label and then Roses. Jones then returned to White Label and played two seasons before he played two seasons for Milpros.

While he was with Milpros, Jones was assisted by midfielders. Gilroy ?Coro? Usher and Malcolm ?Mao Tse Tung? Hemmans, and he scored a number of goals.

Jones? favorite position was the left wing.

?Coro or Malcolm always managed to find me and give me the ball,? said Jones.

?After one of us get the ball to Maurice, he would ?shake the net,?? said Malcolm.

Maurice Jones also played for Sir Andie?s Happy Homebuilders, the legendary junior football team. He displayed goal-scoring skills from early in his football career. While in Standard V at St. Joseph Primary School he helped his alma mater to beat Ebenezer Primary School and win the primary school championship. His teammates at the time included Earl ?Mandingo? Barnett, Phillip ?Ripper? Coye, Ivan ?Gas? McField and Steve Perera.

Jones also played for Belize Technical College (BTC) and helped the school to win the high school football championship in 1969.

In 1980 after he played two seasons with Milpros, Jones retired from football and went to live in the United States. He returned to Belize about 18 months later, came out of retirement and played for Milpros for a while before he returned to the U.S. in 1983.

Maurice Jones did not return to Belize until 1997. He?s been here since then and he says he?s here to stay. He is a building contractor. When asked what made him excel during his football career, Jones said: ?Dedication, hard work and real love for the sport.?

Jones said he is no longer actively involved in football, but he wouldn?t mind helping out.

?The only thing is that there are a lot of young players who do not like to listen,? he said.

Maurice Jones is the father of 5 children. His wife is Barbara Jones nee Diaz.

One of Jones? children, James, 13, who lives in Texas, plays on a football team and is doing quite well.
