HighlightsU.S. Embassy warns visitors to Belize of civil unrest

BELMOPAN, Thurs. Apr. 15, 2021– The U.S. Embassy in Belize has issued an advisory to Americans who are currently in the country, in which it urges them to be vigilant due to possible union demonstrations that may take place in the coming week. The Embassy advises American citizens to avoid areas where demonstrations or protests are likely to occur and to use alternative routes wherever possible.

As a result of the Government of Belize’s decision to proceed with pay cuts and increment freezes, several public sector unions are planning industrial action. On Friday, members of the Belize National Teachers Union picketed in front of the offices of the country’s two major telecommunications companies. Other scheduled acts of protests to be carried out by the unions include the possible blocking of traffic on the major highways, a boycott of fuel stations around Belize and classroom walkouts, among others.

The U.S. Embassy of Belize advises US visitors to Belize to monitor local media reports for updates and to review personal security plans. They are advised to remain conscious of their surroundings and maintain a high level of personal security.
