Eric Garcia still missing at sea – one week after fishing trip

GeneralEric Garcia still missing at sea - one week after fishing trip

SAN PEDRO–One week after Eric Garcia, 22, of San Pedro, went missing during a fishing trip with two of his friends in the open seas of the Tres Cocos area of San Pedro, his body has still not been found.

According to the survivors, their boat overturned and Garcia went under the water and did not resurface.

A search effort to recover his body is still being conducted by volunteers and the Coast Guard, along with divers from San Pedro.

Garcia’s father went to the San Pedro police and reported that his son, Eric Garcia, had failed to return from a fishing trip.

According to police, at about 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 13, Eric Garcia, Joseph Hernandez and Jamal Martinez left Tides Beach Resort, San Pedro, in a 15-foot fiberglass canoe and headed north to the Tres Cocos area to fish. They secured the canoe and spent about two hours fishing and diving, but the sea got rough, and the canoe overturned during their attempts to get back into it.

The strong currents and rough seas took the men over the reef and through the channel, where huge waves pushed them in different directions.

The Coast Guard responded to the disaster and assisted in the rescue of both Joseph Hernandez and Jamal Martinez, but Eric Garcia was never located.
