Bernard allegedly threw a 9mm pistol in an open lot when he saw police

This morning, Gion Bernard, 28, a resident of #91 George Street, was remanded to the Belize Central Prison after he was arraigned on firearm and ammunition charges.

According to police, last night they were on patrol on Victoria Street when they saw Bernard, who is no stranger to them, with a weapon in his hand. When Bernard saw the officers advancing toward him, he reportedly threw the firearm into an open lot in an attempt to avoid being caught with the pistol.

This then caused a “domino effect” when police descended on the area, locked down the street and searched for the firearm, which was eventually found. Bernard and the firearm were then taken to the police station, where the gun was examined and found to contain seven rounds of 9mm ammunition.

Bernard pleaded not guilty to keeping an unlicensed firearm and ammunition when he appeared before Magistrate Clive Lino, but due to the nature of the offense, he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until his next court appearance, scheduled for December 19, 2013.
