Shaw bus driver blames bad lighting for fatal traffic accident

GeneralShaw bus driver blames bad lighting for fatal traffic accident

HATTIEVILLE, Belize District, Fri. Mar. 18, 2016–On Friday, March 18, the George Price Highway was the scene of yet another traffic accident, this time involving a Shaw bus and a cyclist.

On Friday night, a Shaw bus, with license plate 3746, left Novelo’s Bus Station in Belize City at approximately 7:00 p.m., en route to Hattieville. Upon reaching between Miles 16 and 17, however, at approximately 7:45 p.m., the bus knocked down a cyclist, which brought the traffic on the George Price Highway to a standstill, backing it up for at least half a mile.

Edward Broaster, Superintendent of Police and Commanding Officer of Eastern Division Rural, said that the cyclist, Jason Robinson, 33, a Hattieville cook, suffered head and body injuries and was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.

Franco Audinett, the driver of the Shaw Bus, told police that due to the poor lighting in the area, he did not see the cyclist until he was about 5 feet away from him. He swerved to avoid hitting him, he said, but to no avail.

Broaster said that Audinett has been served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) and the matter is being investigated.
