Black Orchid shooting leaves Donovan Bailey, 30, dead

GeneralBlack Orchid shooting leaves Donovan Bailey, 30, dead
On Friday, May 6, 2011 just before 7:30 p.m. 4 men: Donovan Bailey, 30, a tire repairman, Percival Torres, 35, a porter, Morillo Lozaro, 35, and Joaquin Lozaro, 44, a driver, became victims of a deadly shooting incident at a home on Black Orchid Street.

As a result of the attack, Bailey died of his injuries.

Amandala was not able to get anyone to comment on record about the shooting, but we understand that the group usually socialized at the house, which is a family dwelling, where almost anyone is welcome. The men were together outside in the yard when two gunmen rode up on bicycles and reportedly, the two of them fired several shots at the men in the yard.

Morillo Lazaro was shot in the left leg, while bullets grazed both Torres and Joaquin Lozaro. Bailey, who attempted to get out of the line of fire by running further into the yard, was shot in the right side of the chest.

After the gunmen rode off, the men dragged Bailey into the house and put him on a couch. He was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

Bailey was pronounced dead at 7:40 p.m. by a medical officer.  The other two men have since been treated and released from the hospital, but Percival Torres was admitted to ward in a stable condition.

We were able to speak with Bailey’s aunt, Shirlette Galvez, who told us that her nephew’s mother died five years ago. Since then, he has been staying with her. She told us that her nephew was not into gangs and didn’t have affiliations with known gang members.

She said that he was a very loving person; it didn’t matter how much any of his family quarreled with him and scolded him; he would leave for a little while, and come back smiling and talking to everyone.

Galvez told us that Bailey was a very sociable person and had a lot of friends. She said that his only vice was that he liked alcohol. She told us that due to this incident, she is very hesitant to allow her children to leave the house for fear of one of them getting hurt in the same fashion that Bailey was.

Police have one person detained for questioning; up to press time, that person has not been formally charged for the shooting.
