ROARING CREEK, Cayo District, Thurs. June 13, 2024

Benito Cal, a 67-year-old man from the Young Bank area of Camalote Village, Cayo District, was killed and found inside the Roaring Creek Cemetery situated on the George Price Highway after 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 13.

According to an official police report, Cal was last seen around 3:00 p.m. a day before his discovery by a relative as he was buying a beverage at a local Chinese store across the road from Garbutt Gas Station in Roaring Creek, and he mentioned that he was going home.

Sometime after 6:30 a.m. today, two persons passing through the cemetery en route to work discovered Cal’s motionless body in the cemetery in a face-up position, with what appeared to be blood all over the face and neck area and apparent injuries to the face, and apparently dead.

Also at the scene was a Beach Cruiser bicycle, presumably belonging to Cal, lying across his body, and a cement block with suspected blood stains lying beside Cal’s head. One of Cal’s grandchildren identified his body to authorities.

Cal’s relatives spoke to the media and described him as family-oriented with his grandchildren and a cool fellow who was well-liked in the community. Cal would routinely take the long route home, but that day he decided to take a pass through the cemetery and never made it home.

“I don’t know what happened or who could do this to an old man, a 67-year-old man. I don’t have anything to say, but I will leave it in God’s hands. Everything is upon him. He knows what he did and why he did it. I hope one day he finds himself and forgives, that’s all I can say,” one relative said.

The scene was examined and Cal’s body was taken to the Western Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination awaits to be conducted.

Police have not announced if anyone has been detained.
