Police quickly recaptured a prisoner who tried to escape from custody yesterday morning at about 10:00 a.m. Jose Luis Portillo, 26, of Progresso, Corozal, was being taken back to the Corozal Police Station from the Corozal Magistrate’s Court when he bolted out of the police station.

Police chased him and caught him some blocks away, on 3rd Street.

Portillo was then charged with escape from lawful custody.

Police immediately took him back to court, where Magistrate Hurl Hamilton offered him bail of $1,500 for the charge, and remanded him until August 4.

Police said that Portillo had been taken to court on a charge of damage to property, and had been granted bail of $1,500, by the magistrate. He was taken back to the station to prepare the bail documents, but as he entered the station, he received a phone call, and when he finished talking, he bolted out of the station, but he was caught within a short time.

Portillo could not meet any of the bails of $1,500 each, so he was remanded.
