Three Belizeans in Texas road accident

GeneralThree Belizeans in Texas road accident

BELIZE CITY, Tues. June 7, 2016–Well-known Corozaleno, Sostenes Tamay, 46, of Halls Layout, Corozal Town, was killed in a road traffic collision at about 8:30 this morning on Highway 246 in Harris County, Houston ,Texas, USA.

Tamay and two friends had travelled to Houston to buy a vehicle, and vehicle parts. They had just pulled out of a vehicle junkyard onto Highway 246 when an F150 Ford pickup that was reportedly travelling too fast slammed into the left side of the SUV, behind the driver, where Tamay was seated, and as a result, he suffered massive head and body injuries and died almost immediately on the scene.

His family is devastated, and is grappling with the sudden loss. In addition, they must now find $10,000 to bring Tamay’s body from Texas to Corozal to bury him.

A family member told Amandala that their uncle has travelled to Texas to identify the body, after which they will see how they can transport the body to Belize. She said that they are all still in shock and disbelief.

Reports to Amandala are that Tamay; Lennox Young, also known as “DJ Tambran,” and Police Superintendent Amin August, stationed in Belmopan, were in the vehicle. As a result of the collision, DJ Tambran suffered a broken arm, but August escaped unhurt.

Leroy “Tambran” Young, Lenox’s brother, told Amandala that his brother and his friends had been in Texas for three weeks and were to have returned to Belize City in time for his birthday, on Thursday.

Texas police have begun an investigation into the tragedy.

In a telephone interview from Texas, Superintendent August told CTV3 Belize that the men were parked in front of an imports store but decided to go to a parts store because that store opened just at about that time, 8:30, and as the driver, DJ Tambran, pulled out onto the yellow line on the road, and at that point the vehicle crashed into their SUV, almost in the center, but more to the rear.

After slamming into their vehicle, the pickup veered and crashed into a lamppost. People who were in the area rushed to render assistance.

He extends condolences to Tamay’s family.

The name of the pickup driver has not yet been released.
