International Motocross was the main attraction on Sunday, January 29, at the Peter August Stadium in Santa Elena, Cayo District. What began in Benque Viejo with International Motocross competition at the Free Zone area has grown into the Belize Motocross Association, with the primary participants being from the Mennonite communities.
Over six hundred (600) supporters braved the rain to watch the daring young men compete at this extreme sporting event, with riders from Spanish Lookout, Blue Creek, San Felipe, Guatemala, and Columbia.
Winners of competitions were:
MX1 450 Pro Beginners: 1st – Travis Dyck (Blue Creek); 2nd – Peter Wolfe (Spanish Lookout); 3rd – Jimmy Braun (Spanish Lookout).
MX2 250 Intermediate: 1st – Yerson Ortiz (Colombia); 2nd – Gordon Dueck (Spanish Lookout); 3rd – Chris Reimer (Spanish Lookout).
MX-150: 1st – Marlon Dueck (Spanish Lookout); 2nd – Brian Dyck (Blue Creek); 3rd – Abe Wiebe (Spanish Lookout).
It is evident that a new sub-culture within the Mennonite Communities has come of age to excel in these extreme sporting events while competing against international riders, carrying on the tradition that hard work does produce success, and making all of Belize proud of their effort.
Participating riders in the event were: Jimmy Braun, Abe Letkeman, Richard Klassen, Peter Wolfe, Lloyd Reimer, Abe Wiebe, Chris Reimer, Ronald Braun, Donald Braun and Darwin Kornelson (from Spanish Lookout, Belize); Travis Dyck, Steven Klassen, Traver Teichrob and Karl Froese (from Blue Creek, Belize); Willie Penner (from Belmopan, Belize); Jesus Mendoza (from San Felipe, Belize); Agusto De La Riva, Javier Morales, Joel Gonzales, Edwin Cruz, Jairo Calderon and Julie Lemus (from Guatemala); and Jerson Ori (from Columbia).
