UDP parliamentarians vote for reprimand

BELIZE CITY, Fri. June 9, 2017–By majority vote of 5 to 2, parliamentarians of the United Democratic Party voted down a call for the immediate dismissal of Brian “Yellowman” Audinett, sergeant at arms/macebearer in the House of Representatives, and in favor of a reprimand, which includes apology calls to media personnel he attacked inside the National Assembly at the Wednesday, May 17, 2017, public hearing of the Senate Special Select Committee.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Laura Longsworth, who chairs the national staff committee which met on the matter on Friday, voted in favor of his dismissal and so did Florencio Marin, Jr., House member of the Opposition People’s United Party.

Yellowman required to apologize to media personnel whom he assaulted on May 17

There were five votes against, with Lee Mark Chang, president of the Senate, a member of the United Democratic Party (UDP), and other notable UDP parliamentarians: John Saldivar, Patrick Faber and Michael Peyrefitte, former Speaker of the House, voting for a reprimand. The National Assembly staff member who sits on the committee, Ms. Eudice Gibson, Parliamentary Officer III, also voted in favor of the reprimand.

National Assembly Clerk Eddie Webster told Amandala that he was instructed on Friday to supervise Yellowman’s apology calls to KREM’s Marisol Amaya and Plus TV’s cameraman, Cirilo Choco. Those, he said, were executed on Friday evening.

We asked whether any apology was made to 7News cameraman, Dennis Ellis, whom Yellowman told to stop recording otherwise he would throw him over the railing, but the clerk said that the instruction was only given for apologies to Amaya and Choco.

The exclusion of Ellis from the staff committee directive, he told us, was an oversight that he would seek to have rectified.

House Speaker Laura Longsworth said that Yellowman was called before the staff committee on Friday and reminded of the role of the macebearer, and he was warned that if there is another episode of that kind of behavior, it would result in him being fired immediately.
