BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Oct. 29, 2020– In a ceremony held on Wednesday, October 28, 2020, the Belize City Council launched 2 more traffic light systems at the Albert Hoy Street and Chetumal Street intersection and at the Central American Boulevard and Faber’s Road intersection.

The first of these light systems was installed back in December 2019 at the intersection of Neal Penn Road and Central American Boulevard as a key step toward establishing a “smart” city (a city whose major functions are automated). Members of the City Council stated at that first inauguration that more light systems would follow in an effort to continue optimizing traffic flow while also prioritizing the safety of pedestrians in these accident-prone areas.

This Wednesday’s launch featured addresses by Councilor for Traffic, Allan Pollard, Jr.; area representative for Freetown, Hon. Francis Fonseca; and Mayor Bernard Wagner, who expressed his thoughts on the continuous progress the council has been making to ensure that its manifesto promises are materialized.

He said his plan was and continues to be to work to meet those objectives outlined in the manifesto with the support of the Belize City residents. Councilor Pollard also shared his excitement about these structural developments in the city that are geared toward safety and expressed his gratitude to all those who had a hand in bringing this project to life.

Residents can expect to see another traffic light system when the council completes its next installation at the intersection of St. Thomas Street and St. Joseph Street.
